I am a 30+ year electrical engineering veteran of the aerospace and medical avionics industry. Prior to founding Azure and its predecessor medical device company PS Advanced Engineering, my career path included Rockwell Collins Aerospace, Newport Corporation (Laser Beckman Medical) Medical Data Electronics, McDonnell Douglas, Lear Astronics, DRS Technologies (Future Warrior), Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL and Goddard NASA Deep Space and Ground Systems). Combining these work experiences in optoelectronics has provided me the basis for combining new technologies into practical FDA-cleared skincare applications.
Q. What inspired you to start your company and create your brand?
During the “roller-coaster” period at NASA JPL, when I was experiencing the uncertainty of government funding for NASA programs, my wife asked me if I had any knowledge of lasers and light devices for skincare applications. She had seen them at a local Nordstrom and was interested in using them, so we bought one. The device didn’t work well and it was poorly constructed, so I took it apart and investigated the (at the time) growing and relatively new market. I said, “Yes, I can easily do this!” So I did..
Q. What makes your brand different from other beauty brands?
Azure prides itself on its engineering expertise in choosing to design only worthwhile, true medical-grade products using the latest in the constantly upward-evolving electro-optic components. Every competitor device I “reverse engineered” lacked that mindset in that dollars mattered over quality and efficacy.
An example is in the lack of quality materials used, outdated low-power LEDs, for instance. They provided nominal power and very poor light patterns that were not close to matching internationally peer-reviewed clinical studies that listed technology that had been proven in university trials. Also, the high-school attempts at electrical engineering methods that were very inefficient, basically discovering that the consumer products that were offered were “car taillight” powered and far below the standards used in professional-grade dermatologist office LED collagen rejuvenating equipment.
Why are we different? We use the latest technologies that result in devices that impress world-renowned dermatologists and cellular regeneration scientists as being something they will put their reputation behind (they are part of the Azure effort).
Azure’s current Super-Intense LED Multi-Wavelength devices are provable in third-party testing facilities as being small ergonomic devices that are at least equivalent, and in many cases, superior to professional large dermatology panels made in Korea, Japan, Australia, EU, and USA companies. Azure materials are certifiable as industrial- or medical-grade components, and all of our devices are USFDA 510K over-the-counter cleared for home use.
Q. What is your most unique product, and why?
Azure’s new Genesis Collagen Anti-Wrinkle device is a patented unit designed around the desire to have a small tabletop “Apple-like” quality anti-aging platform that provides a full facial treatment under proven efficacious protocols that takes just three minutes a day, five days a week for two months.
Genesis is a small form factor tabletop unit with two articulating or fully flexible LED modules (with a removable self-powered module, allowing for portability/travel) that uses the latest in lithium battery technology, so it does not need to be plugged into a wall.
No need to move a unit around your face in your hand (unless you want to take the portable module on a trip), no small-sized treatment areas requiring many minutes to actually treat a whole facial field.
Genesis is actually a small, elegantly styled unit providing the very same results in wrinkle reduction in three-minute-a-day treatments that a dermatologist or medi-spa office offers in 20-minute sessions—in the serenity of a home environment.
Azure Genesis combination of proprietary micro-structured pattern-forming projected lens technology, along with Best in LED Class use of Cree, Kingbright, Osram, and Vishay Super Intense LED modules in a compact multi-wavelength LED configuration, provides true clinical-grade treatment.
No other company is making such a device, and certainly will be hard-pressed to match Azure’s quality, engineering, and efficacy claims.
Azure is a superior product that is manufactured with the highest quality in mind: ARM Cortex M4 Microcontroller; Engineered Optics; Lithium Polymer Battery powered; removable left side standalone module for travel; simple and ergonomically styled single proximity sensing button with audible sound announcing operation, and Laser Range Detection interlock actuation.
Q. Without giving away too many of your secrets (smile)—what do you anticipate your growth to be next year, and what is your direction for the future of the brand?
Azure Medical is a global company with Singapore Registration and a USA California C-Corp subsidiary in AMT Global (AMT Los Angeles Area is the Engineering and USA Entry Port/Distribution hub). Azure has participated in tradeshows to date at HK Cosmoprof, BeautyWorld Middle East/Dubai, and now Cosmoprof North America.Given the interest level of the industry so far, and past experience in the success of my two prior handheld anti-wrinkle devices on USA TV—combined with Azure’s dedicated marketing personnel—having these three new technology devices spanning a broad potential customer base for home users to medi-spas, Azure anticipates sales in 2018 to exceed 100k units.
Future products include products combining 1.5Um Laser MicroThermal Application, RF, Ultrasonic, Super-Intense Multi-Wavelength LEDs alongside OTC Activating Serums for pain management, cellulite reduction, hair growth, and medical condition monitoring and treatment.
Q. Finally, what gets you out of bed in the morning—what is your daily motivation?
I’ve moved off of spaceborne design, and I have a desire to bring that knowledge down here to provide people with top-flight products that doctors will respect and that will make people happy.
I see a lot of penny-pinching in cheap products that are marketed very well, and phony claims of efficacy in this industry. Well, it ends here with Azure! Yes, I can design cheap junk and make a lot of money just as others have done. But it is my reputation and my honor at stake, thus I will never make cheap junk!
