Interview with Co-Founder Michiyo Oishi

 Q. Can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got started in the beauty business?

I co-founded Beauty Tribe with my two sisters, Lea and Aki—The Oishi Sisters. We all have different educational backgrounds; the eldest, Lea, is a visual artist; I am a potter; and Aki, the youngest, studied economics. Our Japanese grandfather built factories in the 1970s, and he found his niche in beauty appliances. Those were the days when he helped women achieve that perfect Farrah Fawcett look.

My sisters and I grew up in Japan, but we spent many warm summers and holidays at our family’s manufacturing business. Although too young to know at the time, that’s where we began our journey and discovered knowledge on how to develop and create products. Our grandfather’s company grew, and is now in its fourth decade of innovation and quality development.

Q. What inspired you to start your company and create your brand?

Growing up, we saw how problems in manufacturing are answered through both creative and practical solutions. With that in place, we put a new focus on design and user experience. Due to our common background and our trust in each other, deciding to start a company together came naturally. We have always been the front row to each other’s most jubilant and disappointing life moments, and we know the power of Sisterhood.

We believe in empowering women to take on the day and to let Beauty Tribe ensure their hair looks stunning. We call it “One less thing.” Women are out there building everything from companies to families. When your hair looks amazing, it’s one less thing to worry about.

Q. What makes your brand different from other beauty brands?

Our tagline is “Follow Your Dreams. We’ll take care of your hair.” Joining forces today, the three of us bring together our unique heritage of manufacturing, as well as our distinctive business and artistic skills to create Beauty Tribe. Most major appliance companies still rely on men to design and develop the product. We personally design, test, and develop our products from a woman’s point of view.

Q. What is your most unique product, and why?

Our Jetset Hot Roller Collection is a luxury hair tool that balances aesthetic design and unparalleled performance. After reading hundreds of reviews, we took everything people didn’t like about hot rollers and came up with innovative ways to address those issues.

Q. Without giving away too many of your secrets (smile)—what do you anticipate your growth to be next year, and what is your direction for the future of the brand?

We absolutely love what we do and are always excited to embark on the next journey of designing and developing products. We plan to expand our product lineup with a continued focus on luxury hair tools to keep on track with our core competency. Other than our product, we will be focusing on our marketing and retail efforts for growth.

Q. Finally, what gets you out of bed in the morning—what is your daily motivation?

Each woman has her own story, never each one the same. Whether she’s just beginning her career, is a multitasking super mom, or is aging gracefully—knowing that we can find ways to brighten her day and make her feel confident keeps me motivated.
